I’m Dana Gallagher, a Broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Starck Real Estate. I help buyers and sellers across the Chicago suburbs, and here’s my honest look at living in Elk Grove Village in 2026.
Where Is Elk Grove Village, IL?
Elk Grove Village is in Cook County (part is in DuPage County).
Elk Grove Village was incorporated on July 17, 1956, as a planned suburban community, and most of its original houses were built by Centex. The plan kept homes and industry in separate areas, and the industrial side grew into one of the largest business parks in North America, with nearly 3,600 businesses along the west edge of O’Hare.
The village doubled in size in the 1960s, and in the 1970s it grew west of the expressway into Schaumburg Township.

Many homes here date to the village’s planned build-out, so ask about updates and inspections.
A median is just the middle sale. Size, condition, lot and location can put a home well above or below it, so I always pull recent sales on your exact street before we write an offer.

The village takes its name seriously: a small herd of elk lives in a grove at the east edge of the Busse Woods forest preserve, a tradition that started when William Busse brought elk from Montana in the 1920s. Today the herd is cared for by Chicago Zoological Society veterinary staff and forest preserve biologists.

My Tips for Buying in Elk Grove Village
- Get pre-approved first. Sellers want to see you’re ready. Here’s why you need a pre-approval before you buy.
- Confirm the school assignment for the exact address. District lines don’t always follow town lines.
- Look at the real tax bill, not an estimate.
- Time the commute at rush hour before you fall in love with a house.
My Tips for Selling in Elk Grove Village
- Price from real sales. I pull recent Elk Grove Village sales by home type, not just the town median. Start with my free home value report.
- Prep before you list. Small repairs, paint and clean photos help a home stand out.
- Know your tax and HOA details. Buyers ask, so have the latest bill and any association documents ready.
